Everything you need to know before choosing a PPG Instructor, buying PPG equipment and avoiding common mistake new students make! Since training is available from several reputable Powered Paragliding Instructors that provide the equipment for you to train on there is little advanatage to buying equipment first.

So you want to learn to Power Paraglide!

Fantastic news it is simple if you follow these guidelines to keep from making common mistakes and spending money on useless outdated or simply unsafe PPG equipment.

1. Do not buy equipment before choosing a certified instructor. Why should you? In fact it may be better to train on your instructors equipment therefore gaining knowledge of what you like and do not like. Would you buy a car or a boat before you drove it?

2. Choose an instructor that is USPPA certified. Certifications are not required in our sport by the FAA but common sense would tell you that there is no reason not to follow guidlines set up by some of the most talented and knowledgeable people in our sport. If you hear free training run in the other direction. Think logically would you simply give away your time, of course not. Con men are good at what they do and many intelligent people have fallen for the scheme.

3. Find an instructor you are comfortable with and that does not pressure sell you. Making a fast decision often leads to disatisfaction.

4. When you have made your decision on an instructor check them out. If they claim to be a World Champion, or have world records the FAI keeps these records. If you do not see their name there it didn't happen. Also all US champions are listed on the USPPA site.

5. It generally takes 7-10 days to accomplish proper training. Basic Foundation and process are essential to your success. There are many things you need to know and a good instructor has a coherent plan that you can follow. They should have a syllabus, video materials and printed handouts. Class room study should account for approximately 25% of your training.
